About Us Tom's appliance training started with his father, Harold Green. You may know him, he started Green's Appliance in 1958. Tom's mother, Margaret, ran the office and his father, Harold, ran the service calls out of their house from 1958 to 1964. Then, in 1964, when the business grew too large for the house, Harold rented a building on Beaver Avenue in Des Moines. He hired his first service techs and office employees. In 1966, Tom began working for Green's Appliance after school and on weekends. During the summer he ran air conditioner calls with his brothers and his Grandpa Green. By 1968, Tom was running service calls on his own. About twelve years later, he bought Green's Appliance from his parents and they retired to Arizona. Tom moved the company to Hickman Road in Clive and watched the company grow. With the help of many key employees, Green's Appliance grew into one of the largest appliance repair companies in the Midwest. Green's Appliance was the repair center for many appliance dealers in Des Moines as well as a warranty station for over 50 manufacturers. In 1990, Tom had an opportunity to start two more businesses, so he sold Green's Appliance. After successfully setting up the two businesses, he sold them and started "The Appliance Guy" in 1993. Over Tom's career he has been a college level appliance repair instructor and advisor, and also an instructor for the utility company. Appointed to Whirlpool's National Consumer Advisor Board, he has helped consumers throughout the Midwest. Tom was offered a position as a Regional Factory Service Representative with Whirlpool, but decided to stay and continue to service customers in the Des Moines area.
